A speech sound disorder means a child has trouble saying some speech sounds correctly. They may replace one sound with another, leave sounds out, or say sounds in a way that makes their speech difficult to understand. Types of speech sound disorders include articulation disorder, phonological disorder, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), and dysarthria.

Receptive language is your child's ability to understand what they hear and read. Children with receptive language difficulties may have trouble understanding words, directions, questions, or language concepts.
Expressive language is your child's ability to share their thoughts, ideas, needs, and feelings through speaking or writing. Children with expressive language difficulties may know what they want to say but have trouble finding the right words, putting words together into sentences, or clearly expressing themselves.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) includes tools and strategies that help children communicate when talking is difficult. AAC can help children express their wants, needs, thoughts, ideas, and feelings in ways that work best for them. AAC may include simple options like pictures, communication boards, gestures, or signs, as well as high-tech devices that produce speech. These tools can be used along with spoken language and do not prevent children from learning to talk. In fact, research shows that AAC supports language development and gives children a reliable way to communicate while their speech and language skills continue to grow.
